Overview

Zilber Neighborhood Initiative

The Foundation announced the 10-year Zilber Neighborhood Initiative in 2008 and, in 2009 and 2010, selected several Milwaukee neighborhoods for investment. Since then, residents, nonprofit leaders, educators and business owners in Lindsay Heights, Clarke Square, Layton Park, Burnham Park, and Silver City have come together to envision the future of their neighborhoods and take action. Today the Foundation focuses its grants to improve conditions in a 110-block area on the city’s north side and a 170-block area on the south side.

The Foundation provides grants to nonprofits in these neighborhoods for staff, operating expenses, organizing and planning, as well as funding for organizational development, technical assistance, and “early action” projects. To date the Foundation has awarded approximately $18 million to community groups and other nonprofit organizations for these purposes, and helped them leverage nearly $46 million in additional investment to improve their neighborhoods. Foundation staff also spend approximately 75 percent of their time providing hands-on assistance to residents and community groups.
